This unit is a TSR program which patches into the disk interrupt of the BIOS to read and write to extended capacity disks (Disks coded MAXI v1.8 and later and MAXI Disk v3.2 and later). Before DOS version 3.2, DOS did not support longer extended capacity disks. DOS 3.2 introduced the new DOS file system and the ability to use these extended capacity disks for files.
SMAX works in DOS systems with a newer EPROM than a 6494. In some systems, the BIOS detects a DOS Extended Capacity disk by a new interrupt hex number of 13. In systems with a 6494 BIOS, a scandisk or other DOS tool will usually interrupt the DOS system with an error message. In this case, users can still use the disk, but should use the SMAX auto configuration to set the memory flag, disk type, and EOT parameter. The unit will then read and write to the disk in the manner it would normally access disks with DOS.
SMAX saves the memory flag set to ignore extended capacity disks. To revert to normal operation, the memory flag can be restored. SMAX can be stored in a read only memory (DOS version 3.2 or higher), or in RAM. SMAX will track the EOT parameter and adjust in the boot-up as necessary. SMAX can be permanently stored in ROM if desired, and does not load after the system first boots-up.
For DOS 3.2 systems, SMAX will write any read/write operations on extended capacity disks by checking the boot flag of the first disk on the drive. SMAX will keep track of which disks have been accessed in order to create a list of currently used/active disks. Files are always written to the first free track of a disk.
SMAX has a limit of twenty (20) disks per drive. SMAX handles the EOT (last sector) parameter for the greater MAXI extended capacity disks. There are no limits on the maximum number of disks. A read and write operation on a MAXI extended capacity disk will not „interrupt” the floppy disk drive. Disk access interrupt codes on DOS 3.2 are used to track a disk. Tapes will be ignored (they cannot handle the EOT value of MAXI extended capacity disks).
SMAX can be temporarily stored in a read/write file. SMAX does not block the keyboard during the SMAX command mode.
