The Sydney Water Tower or Sydney Water Tower is an iconic landmark overlooking Sydney Harbour, built between 1880 and 1887. It is located on the northern side of the entrance to Sydney Harbour Bridge and the south bank of the Circular Quay Reach of the Harbour, above the Customs House and used for water supply.
History
The water tower was designed to serve the areas that were separated from the main water supply by the tidal James Cook dock, after the city changed from a water supply system that relied on the Sydney Town Hall to a system based on a series of pumphouses and cisterns in the west and a pumping station located in the present-day Martin Place.
The tower was designed by James Barnet and completed in 1880. It was the last major work to be performed by his office, after which he moved to London and a replacement was sought. It was completed in 1887 by the architectural partnership of Hennessy, Hennessy and Co of Sydney, and the Adamson Brothers of Newcastle.
A water tower is distinguished from a pumping station by its elevation above ground level and the building’s often decorative rotunda-type body. The pumping station is distinguished by the presence of the steam-driven pump.
In the 1930s the Board of Water Supply bought the building, intending to use it as a hydro-electric power plant. In 1938 the Central Electricity Authority acquired it for the same purpose. In 1943 the power plant started generating electricity and a visitors’ centre opened in 1950.
After the nationalisation of the electricity industry in the 1970s, the tower came under the ownership of the NSW Electricity Commission (NEC) which used it as a collection point for water that was fed back into Sydney’s central water supply system. The tower was refurbished in the 1980s.
The tower has been a prime location for marine photography.
